In a city that hails the King of Fruits as a national treasure (though it’s prohibited on public transport), durian innovation is rife. There are durian strudels, durian coffees, durian tarts, and even durian pizzas — but one variation we rarely come across is… chargrilled durian.

Granted, barbecuing durians are in no way a new thing, but Double Durian — a new Hamilton Road cafe that opened last month — is offering them as a signature dish that involves baking the whole fruit. Simply cooking durians (husks and all) directly on charcoal blackens the thorny exterior, but the end result looks like steaming hot chunks of creamy durian flesh with a bit of crispy char. Which sounds absolutely amazing to durian lovers, and the total opposite for haters.

If you’re adventurous with durians, Double Durian has tons of other durian-themed items like durian smoothies, crepes, and snow ice. But those who don’t want anything to do with the fruit at all can always try out regular cafe standards like fish and chips, steaks, burgers, and ribs. More details on its Facebook page.

Double Durian is at 8 Hamilton Rd, 9633-7533. Daily 11am-11pm.
