In case you didn’t know, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay dropped by our shores last weekend to sit on the panel of judges at the first ever Marina Bay Sands Culinary Olympics. Held at his restaurant, Bread Street Kitchen, the closed-door competition featured three finalists cooking up a healthy storm with sustainable ingredients.

Foong Man Chung (pictured, far right) — commis chef of the banquet team at Sands Expo and Convention Centre — took top spot with his winning dish of yellowtail stuffed with otah and nasi lemak cooked in bamboo, served with achar and lemongrass emulsion.

But since the MasterChef judge was in town, TODAY grabbed an interview with the man himself and got him to reveal his thoughts on the local culinary scene. Talking about Singaporean chefs, Ramsay said, “it’s only a matter of three, four years before we see local chefs rise up”, and “there is, without a doubt, room for this new wave in Singapore”.

“I think there are very few foodie cities anywhere in the world that are as exciting as it is here,” Ramsay commented.

All this is high praise, coming from the famous food critic known for mercilessly roasting contestants on TV shows like Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef, as well as anyone brave or foolish enough to request for his scathing opinion of their homemade dishes on Twitter (even if it’s in jest).

Just take a look below and your chest will inevitably puff up when you think about what Ramsay said of Singapore’s food scene in comparison.
