Cakes with psychedelic toppings feature at this new paint-splattered dessert cafe

If you’ve ever looked at your cake and thought, ‘I wonder what this would look like with rainbow sprinkles and syrupy drizzles in every colour across the spectrum’, Sugar Lips is your dream dessert cafe come to life.

Tucked away in a corner of orchardgateway mall (just next to Naiise), this kaleidoscopic space is decked out with neon paint splatters everywhere. And we do mean everywhere. Bright hues drip from the walls, splotches find their way to the floor, and even the concrete booths and partitions (which are great for privacy but far from cushy) are not spared. So if your monochromatic-lovin’ self gets easily traumatised by an overload of colours, you’d best stay away.

The unmissable exterior

Of course, this translates into the desserts as well. Expect (artistically?) messy plates crammed with all kinds of extra stuff served with your item of choice.

From the menu, you can order either a standard ($12.90), medium ($14.90) or large ($16.90) dessert with one, two or three toppings respectively. Basically, that means you get to choose from a variety of sweet treats, such as chocolate truffle cake, matcha azuki layer cake, blueberry cheesecake, oneh oneh layer cake, rainbow cake, waffles and molten lava cakes. Then note down any allergies or topping preferences you have, or just sit back and let them surprise you.

Rainbow cake with three toppings

Every plate is different at Sugar Lips, ’cause it’s all up to the cake decorator of the day’s creativity. So what you get one day may be completely different the next.

Taste-wise, the desserts are pretty standard — the cakes and waffles come surrounded by your run-of-the-mill confectionery items like M&Ms, chocolate wafers, marshmallows and brownie bites. But what stood out were the gelatos, especially the refreshing coconut and creamy Thai milk tea ones.

The cafe also offers a limited savoury menu, with bites like Texas BBQ chicken pie ($10.90), veggie mushroom pie ($10.90), chicken quesadillas ($11.90) and beef lasagna ($11.90); but really, the desserts are enough to fill you up.

The extra large punch

To quench your thirst, there’s the regular range of teas, coffees and soft drinks. Otherwise, continue on your sugar rampage and get concoctions like pineapple mintdaze ($9.90) and jungle fruity punch ($13.90). Just be warned: They come in extra large, so don’t go downing them by yourself or it won’t be long before you crash from your temporary high.

Sugar Lips is at #02-01 orchardgateway, 277 Orchard Rd, 6386-6387. Daily 11am-10pm.
