If you’ve visited London in the past couple of years or so, you’d be familiar with the eye-catching red awnings of UK café chain Pret A Manger all across the city.
The British gourmet sandwich shop chain may be relatively unknown here, but overseas it’s pretty prominent. Known for its focus on organic and natural ingredients with freshly prepared sandwiches, baguettes, salads, Pret A Manger basically does ready-to-do edibles and beverages that happen to be healthy as well. It first opened in Hampstead, London in ’86, and has since expanded to over 350 shops worldwide, with the atas sandwiches finding homes in USA, Paris, Hong Kong, Dubai and more.
Oh, and it did try its hand in opening an outlet here at Ogilvy Centre along Robinson Road in the past — but alas Singaporeans just weren’t into organic stuff back then. It shuttered, upped and left in 2007, just after a year of operations.
Now that Singaporeans are more woke in terms of eating healthy, the chain is interested in dipping its toes once again on our shores. According to The Straits Times, Pret A Manger wants to open a store in Changi Airport Terminal 3 by June 2017. A good place to test the water too, as travellers will be more familiar with the chain than Singaporeans — and since most of us are more willing to splurge for that ‘organic’ label, it won’t be long till the chain expands beyond the airport.
