Apparently, some fruit stalls in Singapore are giving away durians for free

Free durians — now, that’s a phrase we never thought we’d hear. But hey, dreams do come true, and today’s that day. Or rather, that week.

Apparently, due to a substantial drop in durian prices thanks to an oversupply from Malaysia — seems like the King of Fruits ripened especially fast under unusually hot weather — some vendors in Singapore are actually giving away some of their supply for free.

According to The New Paper, at least two stalls have been doling out the spiky fruit without charge since Monday. Naturally, that means crowds gathering as people catch wind of the ridiculously good deal at Ah Lan Fresh Fruits Stall along Balestier Road and Sam Fruit Trading in Tampines.

The owner of the former, a woman in her 70s, told The Straits Times that she will continue to distribute 300kg worth of durians each day until tomorrow. Even though this move will set her back $3,000, she says that it’s her way of showing appreciation for her customers’ support over the decades.

At the latter, about 1,300kg worth of durians were given out on Monday over two hours to more than 500 people. However, these were solely meant for the elderly — but that didn’t stop young folks from joining the queue. Freeloaders, sigh. Anyway, the owner plans to do this again (and again, only meant for seniors) next Monday.

Guess the best things in life can indeed be free. Sometimes. And sometimes only if you’re old enough.

But if you’re cool with paying for your durians, then it’s business as usual for you, friends — though if you’d like to try something new, then may we suggest these bizarre durian drink combinations, some durian lava buns, or a meal of chargrilled durians.
