Alternative Chinese New Year dishes: Bak kwa pizza and pineapple tart crumble

If you’re just going through the motions because every Lunar New Year feels exactly the same to you, check out these restaurants — they’ve all got something new up their sleeves. Take the new-ish Phat Cat Laundry, for example. Its menu features a dessert called pineapple tart crumble, which looks like a deconstructed version of your favourite buttery snack, alongside other dishes like braised pork belly and salted egg yolk king prawns.

Then there’s Pizza Express, which offers bak kwa in pizza form. Think barbecued bak kwa with pork floss, red and yellow peppers, mozzarella and crispy prawn crackers, all drizzled with a dash of plum sauce.

For fans of abalone, try Dehesa’s seafood paella that comes topped with abalone and pomegranate. Alternatively, hit up the National Gallery Singapore’s Aura restaurant for an Italian CNY dinner of items like Hokkaido scallop carpaccio, porcini mushroom tortelli with pumpkin and steamed seabass.
