Since it closed down about three weeks ago, Ah Bong’s Italian has been popping up a lot in our minds, usually during the hangry lunchtime hours. Where else can you find supremely tasteful gourmet pasta dishes and desserts for cheap?
Gone it may be, but definitely not dead. Ah Bong’s Italian has now morphed into Ah Bong Goes To School, where accountant-turned-chef Chris Ng is bringing his mad kitchen skills to a school canteen. Yes, the man who honed his skills under celebrated three Michelin star chef Bruno Menard is now serving kids in a tuckshop — and that is totally awesome.
After teasing that his next project would take place on school grounds, Ah Bong Goes To School is up and running, selling gourmet dishes such as homemade pizzas, brownies, and pasta bakes to students. If you thought Ah Bong’s Italian was pretty affordable, wait until you see the prices of Ah Bong Goes To School.
Judging from the prices, it might be safe to assume that he’s shifted to a primary school, which remains unnamed. Probably for good reason too — you don’t want strangers trespassing on school grounds just to eat his food. But you can’t fault fans for wanting to be a kid again just to enrol in the school and have his food for lunch everyday.
Ng’s main clientele right now may be kids, but he’s in no way cutting corners. The essence of fresh, wholesome food that we love so much in his restaurants continue to exist in his tuck shop stall.
According to the stall’s Instagram bio, it seems that Ng is happier now with with his working hours. No longer will he have to toil and busy himself with operating on the weekends.

The question is, where were folks like him when we were in primary school?
