13 unique salted egg yolk dishes in Singapore

Forget salted egg yolk croissants and salted egg yolk fries. They’re so yesteryear. Even seafood and meats drenched in the coveted sauce are everywhere. Been there, ate that. Of course, there’s the mother of all salted egg yolk dishes, the one that started this overwhelmingly popular trend – the liu sha bao itself. But we’re not here to talk about any of that.

The craze has gotten so out of hand that anything and everything can now be salted egg yolk-ified. So we’re here to tell you about the most non-conformist creations out there, from the mild to the wacky. Now go forth and revel in everything salted egg yolk.


Salted egg yolk potato crisps ($7) at The Golden Duck

Self-proclaimed as ‘dangerously good’, this packet of addictive chips has to be eaten all at once, or it’ll disappear mysteriously from your pantry the next day.

Okay, so biscuits aren’t that weird. But we had to mention this magic in a jar ‘cause the crumbly cookies come with the addition of curry leaves to give each bite a flavourful punch.

Move over, fries. These crispy, battered onion rings are served up drenched in salted egg yolk custard sauce – pretty much your calorie limit for the day. But oh-so-worth-it.

Well, they’ve already proclaimed themselves to be ‘EXPERTS IN #DANGEROUSLYADDICTIVE SALTED EGG SNACKS!’ – we’re gonna take their word for it. If you’re not a fan of fish skin, they’ve also got jars of salted egg sauce ($7.50) and bags of potato chips ($15) to fulfill your cravings.

Salted egg yolk custard molten chocolate cake ($10) at Sunrise Bistro & Bar

You can also get the lava cake at Five and Dime Eatery, but since news of its impending closure (on Apr 29), we thought we’d offer an alternative. This East Coast Park space does a pretty mean rendition of the lava cake, with a rich, melty salted egg centre and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Peach and salted yolk tart ($7.50) at Tart Blanc

Slice into the tart and watch as the gooey centre trickles down the sides of the pastry, then dig in to bites of peach, pistachio and salted egg yolk.

Salted egg French toast ($12.90) at 7Kickstart

It’s like a lava cake, but with French toast – think of it as the café version of the liu sha bao. Cut into the thick, buttery slices of brioche, and liquid salted egg flows out. Oh, and order it to share, ‘cause you might get kinda gelat after a few bites. Also, this café apparently really loves its salted egg, ‘cause it offers the sauce with fish and chips as well.

How’d you like to sip your molten concoction? At this cocktail bar, you can. Savour the blend of salted egg yolk cured overnight in dark Venezuelan rum, vanilla and sugar, served in a ceramic cup surrounded by burnt hay and smoked star anise. It’s an experience in itself.

Salted egg yolk rainbow cake ($8.90/slice) at NOM – Bistro & Bakery

This little rainbow cake was probably just chillin’ out on a tray, minding its own business, when it got captured and slathered with salted egg yolk butter cream frosting. What a way to get in on the craze.

Steamed salted egg yolk xiao long bao ($7.80/four) at Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao

Look past the Oompa Loompa hue of these xiao long baos and you’ll taste the chunks of minced pork with salted egg yolk swimming in a savoury broth. Try it, if just to say you have.

Salted egg black sesame cake ($9/slice) at Dapper Coffee

Black sesame and salted egg? Why the heck not. This fluffy chiffon cake infused and frosted with black sesame sandwiches a layer of salted egg custard, with a splash of more custard and salted egg crumbs on top. The café also serves a salted egg Earl Grey cake with gingerbread, vanilla spice, salted egg yolk drizzle and marshmallows. Yum, indeed.

The name of the dish already sounds like a mouthful. This Chinese restaurant has managed to crank it up one notch above ice cream parlours like Tom’s Palette and Scoop Therapy with its salted egg yolk and pumpkin blend atop a bed of pandan-flavoured sticky rice.
