5 ways to know if your house is haunted

Do you hear voices at home? Are your things being moved around? Is poltergeist activity ruining your sleep?

Coming to the conclusion that your house may be haunted is usually a difficult one. How many people would get excited over such a thing? Fortunately, most of the time, there isn’t even a haunting. The strange sounds you hear are usually caused by the things around you.

Bad piping, old floor boards and even the odd blind spot where the shadows of passersby are cast on your wall are normal but common misassumptions of a haunting.  Therefore, identifying and correcting these issues are likely to calm your nerves.

Sometimes though, what you hear, see and feel cannot be explained.  If you think your home is may be harbouring unwanted occupants, don’t panic yet!

Keep calm and verify that something may indeed be going on by paying attention to just five simple things:

1. Shadows

Most of us have seen shadow figures. At a glance, they seem to dart out of view and disappear as quickly as they appear.

It’s hard to use this as proof of a haunting but if you’re constantly seeing these figures at home and can safely rule out that they’re projections of someone’s shadow, then you might have a few unwanted guests.

If you’ve seen shadow figures standing in dark corners staring at you, it’s probably time to hire some help.

2. Doors closing, furniture moving

Most of the time when such a thing happens, you’re rarely around to see it. You’ll hear it though, especially when it’s a door closing or opening.

Furniture too would be in a different place and sometimes the lights would be turned off when you could have sworn it was switched on or vice versa.

Usually, these things can be traced back to absent-mindedness but sometimes, it’s something else entirely. If they occur frequently enough, it’s time to make a conscious effort to remember when you’ve closed the door or where you’ve placed certain things in an effort to document these occurrences.

3. Voices

You hear someone call out your name when you’re alone or in the middle of the night while you’re in bed. You hear whispers and people talking so softly that you can’t make out what they’re saying. You’re sure it’s not your neighbours because they’re not home either. If these voices persist and are constantly hounding you, it could be more than your imagination.

4. Cold spots

It’s a warm night and you’re perspiring while watching TV when suddenly the air turns very cold. It feels like you’ve stuck your hand in the freezer. This has happened several times before when you walk into a particular area and only that spot is freezing while the rest of the house is warm.

Sometimes, the temperature in the entire house can also drop for no reason. If you don’t have an air-conditioner, then this can be a strange occurrence. If you do have one, make sure you have it checked first.

5. Missing things

Your stuff disappears in your house only to turn up several days later in the most unusual of places. Your things are no longer in their regular spots and after searching high and low for them, you find them lying someplace you’re sure you’ve checked.

Ghosts tend to do things like that when they’re trying to get your attention. These occurrences are minor but if you continue to neglect them, it might force the entity to ramp up efforts. This can be potentially problematic.

Always trust your instincts when you think your house is haunted. Your body is capable of telling you when you’re in danger or when something is amiss.  Of course, validate your gut feeling with proof.

The good news is that a true haunted house — like in Hollywood movies — is very rare. Also, most HDB flats in Singapore are new so there’s really no cause for concern.

However, most hauntings occur because of an object that is brought into the house. Finding out the cause will be a job for professionals.

Reputable paranormal investigators won’t charge you anything but would most likely only want to film the investigation for documentation and easier post-analysis.

If you think your house is haunted, then this is really a small thing to do for peace of mind.
