Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) spokesperson Hernando Cabrera on Monday answered several questions regarding the unified LRT-MRT “tap and go” cards.

The use of the new tap and go cards, which will replace the existing magnetic cards, will begin in May for the LRT 2, June for the MRT 3 and July for the LRT 1.

In his Twitter account, Cabrera explained that a “Beep” stored value card can be bought for P20 and be loaded with up to P10,000. Each smart card can be used for four years.

However, Cabrera said that unlike the magnetic cards, riders can no longer enjoy the so-called bonus rides.

“Your ticket and the balance will remain with you, but you need to load additional amount to complete the trip,” he said.

Cabrera said single journey cards will still be available for LRT 1, LRT 2, and MRT 3, but these will be sold only in the stations. He said the new cards can be bought from vending machines and in stores outside the stations.

“Single journey tickets will be sold only in stations and can be used only in the line where they are sold,” he explained.

Cabrera there will be gate slots to capture single journey cards.
