Statue of the late Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson restored

It pays to know your history.

The city government of Manila is getting praise for restoring the bronze sculpture of the late Mayor Arsenio Lacson, who was considered by many to be the best mayor the city ever had.

“The Lacson statue finally regained its arms—as well as the newspaper that the seated figure was holding—and was also brought back to its original spot on the Roxas Boulevard promenade facing Plaza Rajah Sulayman,” reports Erika Sauler in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The statue was destroyed during the onslaught of Typhoon Pedring in Sept 2011. Its arms and the broadsheet they were holding were also cut off (presumably by thieves). The report also added: “The sculpture was completed by Julie Lluch in 2003, after being commissioned by then Mayor Lito Atienza.” This time around, Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada’s administration spearheaded its restoration.

Following this, heritage conservationists may ask the city government to also save Capitol Theater, an art deco building on Escolta.
