Famous YouTuber Bretman Rock has always been proud about his Filipino roots and this was put on full display in his latest video where he cooks adobo with his mom all while switching between English and the local language Ilocano.

The video posted on his YouTube channel yesterday is more than 20 minutes long and shows Rock and his mother preparing and cooking adobo while answering questions from his followers.

At the beginning of the video, Rock talks about how his mom was initially scared to film the video, fearing that viewers would make fun of how she spoke English.

He then goes on to talk about an experience many first-generation American immigrants share — having to translate for their parents.

“I used to always be my mom’s translator and I’m pretty sure a lot of immigrant kids would know that,” he said.

Rock, whose real name is Bretman Sacayanan, was born in Ilocos but moved to Hawaii when he was 7 years old.

In the video, he then continues to talk about the immigrant experience and slams people who make fun of immigrants for not speaking English.

“Like how can you make fun of someone for not knowing your language when you don’t know my language either?” Rock asks.

He ends the rant with one of his signature feisty comments.

“So if you are here to literally just shit on my mom or like anyone for not knowing how to speak English, get the f*ck out because b*tch you are sick. You are ugly. You are disgusting. And you are, what? Broke.”

While the introduction is pretty intense, the rest of the video is much lighter. Rock helps his mom cook adobo — theirs is made with chicken wings, red bell peppers, and carrots — while answering fan questions.

While recording, Rock spoke to his viewers in English but sometimes switched to Ilocano while speaking to his mom.

In the video, he also shares stories from when he was still living in the Philippines. In the end, Rock invites some of his friends to try the adobo who all say it’s good.

“Like I said, they are paid actors,” Rock jokes.

While the video is very different from the usual makeup-related content Rock is known for, it still raked in views and now has more than 1.8 million views on YouTube.

For those who aren’t big on YouTube, Rock, 20 years old, is actually one of the social media platform’s more famous content creators. He’s known as a “make-up guru” and currently has 3.9 million YouTube subscribers, 2.2 million Facebook followers, and 10.4 million Instagram followers.

He was also part of Forbes‘ 30 Under 30 Asia list this year.

In a tweet, Rock thanked his fans for the positive response to his cooking video.

“Thank you guys so much for all the support on my video with my mother !! She can’t stop reminding me how many views were at lol! She loves you guys,” he said.

Those enjoyed the adobo video can look forward to similar content as Rock said that “this is not the end of our cooking show.”

What does he want to cook next? Apparently, it’s a toss-up between the sour soup sinigang and the vegetable stew pinakbet.
