A young couple was arrested after they allegedly killed their newborn baby in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Police arrested the couple, both still in college, after discovering they threw their newborn baby boy at a banana plantation at the back of their boarding house last Sat, Jul 25.

Authorities said the mother gave birth inside a comfort room, without the aid of a doctor or midwife.

The couple allegedly wanted to conceal the birth because they were supposedly not yet prepared to take on the responsibility of raising a child.

Their landlady, however, discovered what happened and reported the incident to authorities.

When authorities and concerned individuals discovered the baby, it was already lifeless and being swarmed by ants. They nonetheless brought the baby to the hospital, where it was officially declared dead.

Kabankalan Police chief Supt. German Garbosa said the couple will be charged with infanticide.

The baby’s father is currently in jail, while the mother is being treated at a hospital and is under hospital arrest. —from a report by Mark Salanga, ABS-CBN News Negros
