A woman’s arm was ripped off yesterday when she “felt dizzy” and fell onto the tracks after alighting from the MRT-3 in Makati’s Ayala station.

According to GMA News, the incident happened at around 2:30pm yesterday.

In an interview with radio news station dzBB, Transportation Undersecretary Cesar Chavez said the woman’s right arm got caught in the train’s “coupler,” what they call the link between the first and second cars.

“I was surprised that a woman was on the tracks trying to [climb] up. No one responded right away. Someone shouted at the guard to help the lady,” a witness told local news website Rappler.

“I think only four inches of her arm remain,” she added.

The woman was identified as Angeline Fernando, 24, of Pasay City.

According to Inquirer.net, the MRT had to stop their operations at the Shaw Station from Quezon Avenue due to the incident at around 3pm, but train service returned to normal at around 3:40pm.

There is good news, however.

Chavez said in a follow-up interview with Rappler that Fernando had a successful operation this morning and would be under observation at the Makati Medical Center for a few days.

“Angeline’s arm is reconnected to her body; the bone, the nerve, and vessels are reconnected. She is under observation at least until Friday,” Chavez said.

Government officials told media that MRT-3 management would help Fernando’s family with the medical bills.
