Woman throws acid on her ex’s face, her friend hits him with steel pipe

You’d think that this kind of thing happens only in telenovelas. (Or is it a case of life imitating art?)

“At around 8:30pm on Monday, Mar 10, 26-year-old Raymond Rodriguez went to see his ex-girlfriend, Beejay Martinez, who worked as a cashier in a medical clinic at Felisa Building, Gov. Santiago Street, Barangay Malinta, Valenzuela City,” reports Nathaniel R. Melican in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

A few moments after Rodriguez and Martinez saw each other, the latter reportedly threw acid on Rodriguez’s face. Also on the scene was Martinez’s friend, who was identified only as “Irene.” As Rodriguez reeled from the acid attack, Irene supposedly began to hit him with a steel pipe. Irene and Martinez then took turns beating up Rodriguez with the said steel pipe.

The commotion caused some barangay officials to rush to the clinic. By the time they were there, Irene had fled. They arrested Martinez, who continues to stay silent when asked why she attacked Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was rushed to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center and was later transferred to the Chinese General Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Aside from head injuries, police said he sustained severe chemical burns on his face. The acid used turned out to be muriatic acid.

The 31-year-old Martinez has been charged with frustrated murder. Police are hunting down Irene as well.
