A few minutes after the mass held near the Tacloban Airport was over, strong winds caused part of the stage that was used for the mass to collapse.
At that time, Pope Francis’ convoy was already on its way back to the Philippine Airlines (PAL) plane.
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) publication The Varsitarian, though its corresponcent MC Rodolfo, reported that a woman had died in the mishap.
Voltaire Tupaz of Rappler also confirmed that the “a woman was killed” in the stage accident. The report cited information from Jose Llacuna, director of the Center for Health and Development for Eastern Visayas.
The woman had reportedly been waiting for the Papal convoy to pass by. As of 2pm on Sat, Jan, 17, the woman’s identity has not yet been revealed because the authorities will still be speaking to her family.
