It took more than a year but police finally arrested today a woman who allegedly killed an elderly woman she borrowed money from.
The suspect was identified as Mary Jane Canilong who allegedly killed 74-year-old victim Erlinda Barron in August last year in Bacoor City, Cavite, ABS-CBN News reported.
Canilong allegedly hit Erlinda using a bottle when the latter visited her home to charge her for the money she owed. Also allegedly involved in the crime was the suspect’s live-in partner Rey Balore who the police are still searching for.
According to the same report, the two suspects also allegedly stole from Erlinda on that day.
Police finally caught Canilong today after receiving a tip on her whereabouts. This prompted an operation in Baclaran, Parañaque on the basis of an arrest warrant for homicide, ABS-CBN News reported.
More than a year after the incident, the victim’s family remains distraught.
According to ABS-CBN News, they stormed the Bacoor City Police Station where Canilong is currently detained and pulled the suspect’s hair until authorities intervened.
“My grandmother would help her. [With] everything she needed, then that’s what she’s going to do to my grandmother?” Melissa Barron, the victim’s grandchild told ABS-CBN News in Filipino.
However, Canilong said that she did not mean to kill Erlinda and that she was just annoyed by how she kept on asking her for the money she owed.
The suspect said she only hit the victim once and only because the latter allegedly pushed her too. Canilong also said that her live-in partner Balore was not present during the incident.
Police are still looking for Balore who is currently the Bacoor City Police’s fourth most wanted person.
