This has to be taken seriously. “The Department of Health (DOH) has announced that Puerto Galera is an ‘area of concern’ due to the high intensity of the HIV spread in the town,” reports Jenny F. Manongdo in Manila Bulletin.
In particular, the tourists in the popular summer destination were warned to avoid unprotected sex.
The DOH went on to reiterate their suggestions against HIV infection: abstaining from sex, becoming committed to just one sex partner, using condoms, and avoiding the sharing of needles and syringes.
While the DOH may not have announced statistics for HIV infection in Puerto Galera, the fact that they singled out the locale for the warning should be a wake-up call.
