Many Filipinos will recognize White Castle Whisky, the storied liquor brand that prides itself on being “the only affordable Philippine whisky in the market” as well as its smooth, hangover-free liquor. A decades-old drink of choice for titos (uncles), the historically macho brand has been equated with its memorable calendar girls and risqué — if not problematic — ads.
After first breaking its long-time tradition by placing chef and Youtuber Ryan Morales Reyes, aka Ninong Ry on the cover, the good people at White Castle Whisky has continued to deviate from the norm for its 2022 calendar model — get ready for White Castle Whisky “gurl”, Sassa Gurl!
“Nung 2021, ang calendar model namin, yung laging taga-luto tuwing may inuman. Ngayong 2022, ang calendar model namin, ang laging nagpapainom tuwing may inuman (In 2021, our calendar model was the one who would cook the food at every drinking session. This 2022, our calendar model is the one who would pour your glass at every session),” White Castle Whisky wrote on Facebook, before introducing Sassa Gurl, Felix Petate Jr. in real life, known for their hilarious TikTok content.
Naturally, the brand’s choice for this year’s calendar model tickled the ribs of the people of the internet.
Many made fun of how high the whisky seemed to be poured in a drinking glass, which is typically taken as a shot or on ice.
“Ba’t ginawang iced tea? (Why does this look like iced tea?)” One netizen asked.
“Nice one Sassa! Pero siz ang taas ng tagay (But sis, the shot is so high),” fellow content creator Karl Zarate commented.
“Tagay mo jan bheb, hindi makatarungan, parang tagay yan nung friend ko na tumakas lang sa magulang tapos pag-uwi n’ya tumagos na sya sa pinto (Babe where’s the justice in this shot? This looks like the shot my friend once drank who snuck from her parents and crashed through the door when she came home),” streamer Beki Mon shared.
In spite of the comical photo, many praised the ad’s inclusivity and congratulated Sassa for breaking stereotypes.
“Imagine kung ilang batang badette ang pinangarap maging calendar girl noon. Legit na nakakatuwa (Imagine how many gay children once dreamed of being a calendar girl when they were young. This legit makes me happy),” a netizen said.
Cheers to you, Sassa Gurl!
