Oh, come on.
Employees of the Bureau of Internal Revenue claim they have become the subject of harassment since Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte announced that graft and corruption is still alive and kicking in their office.
Without citing his sources, reporter Jun Ramirez wrote in Manila Bulletin quoted revenue officials as saying that “it is the taxpayers who are now harassing tax examiners as evidenced by many complaints sent via 8888 of the Civil Service Commissioner.”
So bad is the bullying, the report said, “that taxmen from regional offices as well as the specialized audit divisions in the national office now prefer to stay in their offices than visit business establishments to do audit work to avoid getting the ire of dishonest taxpayers who are refusing to pay deficiency taxes.”
A Manila revenue district officer even resigned for peace of mind, and “many in the bureau are expected to follow”.
Seriously?
We wonder why these BIR employees feel like they’ve run out options. They should just file a counter-complaint against those taxpayers and keep doing their job.
As Duterte has also said in his many speeches, as long as you do your job, he’s got your back. Right?
