It’s a common Pinoy scene: relatives throwing around tactless comments about a person’s physical characteristics — weight, height and shape among them. The problem with this is this unique brand of Pinoy humor is that no one gets it but us.
This Filipino brand of low-brow fun has gone a bit too far this time.
Vlogger Elayne Peddy from UK teared up as she shared her story on how her stay in the Philippines, particularly in El Nido, shattered her self-confidence.
She said that she was called a “fat ugly monkey” and “big black fat girl”. On several occassions, she was asked to pay twice the fare of her tricycle ride because of her size.
Though she had fine experiences in Manila and Cebu, the El Nido leg of her trip was so traumatic that she said she will never set foot in the country again.
Filipino humor can be deprecatory, and some of us are aware that it’s not a good thing. It may be a matter of cultural differences, but someone got hurt.
