Viral on social media right now is a tragic video showing how a guy was hit by a car as he was running away from a dog in Quezon City, resulting in his death.

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old college student Joshua Cabag. Ironically, the incident happened at around 1:57am on Jan. 4, Friday — his birthday.

The video of the incident was posted on Facebook by Cabag’s close friend Chrisha Lingad on Friday and had more than 400,000 views, more than 4,000 shares, more than 2,000 reactions, and more than 1,000 comments as of this article’s posting.

Lingad told Coconuts Manila in a Facebook message that Cabag was on his way to a friend’s house with three others at the time.

In the video, four people can be seen walking along Sto. Niño St. when a dog suddenly starts chasing them. The group runs away towards the intersecting street but a car hits Cabag as he turns to the corner.

He was brought to the Quezon City General Hospital but eventually passed away. Cabag’s companions were left unhurt, Lingad said.

She said authorities still don’t know the driver’s identity.

Lingad only found out about what happened later in the day at around 11am when a friend went to her house to borrow something and mentioned the incident. She then started to get updates about the tragedy on social media and through texts.

She said she decided to upload the video, which they retrieved from a homeowner, to get justice for her friend.

“We celebrated his birthday and lit a candle on the site of the incident, that’s when the owner of the CCTV approached us and gave us [the video],” Lingad said. “We posted it so people can help us one way or another to find justice for our friend.”

Cabag was studying to be a teacher and was due to graduate in June, she said.
