Traffic in Manila is bad, but you’ve still gotta play by the rules.
Facebook user Nina Ellaine Dizon shared a now-viral video on Saturday of her driving and blocking a bunch of motorists from driving on the wrong side of the road. She wrote in her post in a mix of English and Filipino: “File[d] under: reasons why the Philippines doesn’t progress.”
She said in the post that she could’ve just gone the other way and tolerated the motorists driving on the wrong side of the road, but decided not to.
“Discipline, don’t counterflow. Let’s do this one by one, I have a lot of time,” she can be heard ranting in her car in Filipino.
“We are at a national highway and these smart people are counterflowing (driving on the wrong side of the road),” she says sarcastically in the video.
From sedans to hatchbacks to SUVs to trucks — she would stop in front of them and honk at them to go back to their right of way.
“The rules are so simple, friends. You guys should learn how to cooperate while on the road and not counterflow,” she rants.
This goes on for almost four minutes until she finally stops the last driver in a pick-up truck from counterflowing. She cheers and says: “We defied the stupidity of humankind.”
The Facebook post garnered over 2.9million views, 73,000 reacts, and 48,00 shares as of this article’s posting. Netizens had mixed reactions about the incident.
Facebook user Hannah Pedralvez said in Filipino: “THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE. DISCIPLINE IS NEEDED.”
Jhoanna Marie said: “true discipline is what we should learn first”
Angelika Shaine Esquillo said it was satisfying to watch.
Dags Fernandez Sasot added: “Sister, YOU DESERVE AN AWARD!!! BRAVO!!!”
However, others like Luigi Octaviano said: “It’s alright to call them out but she also violated the anti-distracted driving law too… I’m just being fair.”
By the looks of it, Dizon was using a cellphone to record the video.
RA 10913 or the Anti-Distracted Driving Act is a Philippine law prohibiting motorists from using gadgets like cellphones or cameras while driving. Violators can be fined PHP5,000 (US$95) for the first offense, PHP10,000 (US$190) for the second offense, and PHP15,000 (US$285) for the third offense with a three-month suspension of their driver’s license.
Violations incurred beyond the third offense shall be penalized with the revocation of driver’s license and a fine of PHP20,000 (US$380).
Christian Comendador also said: “Don’t force your rights. And you also [violated] the anti-distracted law.”
Andrew Alcoriza asked Dizon: “What were you using to record with? Dash cam or a phone? Because if phone, it’s ok but you also have a violation.”
