Will students welcome this change?
“UP vice president for public affairs Prospero de Vera recently said that the Board of Regents (BOR), the highest policy-making body of the University of the Philippines (UP), is set to tackle in its next meeting a proposal to move the opening of classes from June to August next year,” reports Janvic Mateo in The Philippine Star.
De Vera added that said that almost all of UP’s constituent universities—Baguio, Diliman, Los Baños, Manila, Visayas, Mindanao, the Open University, and the autonomous college in Cebu—have expressed their support for the shift. He said the UP board of regents will discuss the proposal in its meeting in January. Only the Diliman community has not yet given its decision to back the proposal, as the students, faculty, and staff said they wanted more consultations.
De Vera went on to explain that “the upcoming integration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) in 2015 is one of the main factors that contributed to the decision of the UP administration, led by President Alfredo Pascual, to push for the change in the academic calendar.” Still, it’s up to the BOR to decide whether to push through with the plan.
