Six years is too long for a bad President and too short for a good one, according to the camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay.
This is why Binay prefers a shorter term of four years for the President, with re-election for another four years.
“For the Vice President, six years is too long for a bad president and too short for a good one. Ang taumbayan ang pinaparusahan kung anim na taon silang maghihintay para matapos ang termino ng isang palpak at manhid na pamunuan,” Joey Salgado, head of the Office of the Vice President media affairs, said in a statement issued on Friday.
“Dapat may pagkakataon ang taumbayan na magpahayag ng kanilang damdamin sa pamamagitan ng kanilang mga boto matapos ang apat na taon kung gusto nilang umalis o magpatuloy ang isang presidente,” he added.
He said Binay’s preference for a shorter term with re-election is grounded on his past experience as mayor.
Binay was elected mayor of Makati City for three consecutive terms from 1988 until 1998. He again served as Makati mayor in 2001 until 2010.
He will seek the presidency in the 2016 elections, under the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).
“As long as the people elect their leaders in an honest, free and credible election, they should not be restricted as to their choices,” Binay’s spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Salgado said it has has always been the position of the Vice President that economic provisions in the Constitution should be given utmost priority.
“Certain restrictive provisions hinder the entry of foreign investments which would in turn generate jobs and address the prevailing problems of hunger and poverty especially in the rural areas,” he said.
