Bless the heart of whoever thought of this, but dude, your coverup isn’t as clever as you thought.

The Philippines’ Bureau of Customs (BOC) has seized a kilo of shabu (meth) that was hidden in, of all places, a frame of the Virgin Mary, GMA News’s 24 Oras reported yesterday.

According to authorities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, this was the first time a religious item was used to smuggle drug paraphernalia into the Philippines. The drugs were reportedly found tucked behind the Virgin Mary frame.

The religious item was apparently given as a “holy frame gift” from Africa. Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña told 24 Oras thought the cover-up was clever. “They know that most Filipinos are Catholics,” he said in Filipino.

But apparently not clever enough.

Apart from the drugs found inside the frame, over PHP15million (US$276,168.60) worth of illegal drugs were seized in different packages on the same day.

One kilo of shabu was hidden inside a foot and calf massager from Thailand. Meanwhile, some sachets of the same drug were found inside letters from the United States while marijuana was found inside some gloves and jerseys from other countries.

People, please. Can’t we just enjoy regular pasalubongs (souvenirs)?

Authorities also confiscated 69,870 tablets of Valium and Mogadon which were from Pakistan. Authorities said these are used as date rape drugs and have the effect of making an unsuspecting victim fall asleep.

Authorities are still investigating who the real senders and consignees of the packages are.
