Viral: What color is this dress?

Maybe somebody is just messing with our heads. This viral “Dress Debate” has caused confusion across several countries.

“An unusual debate is attracting a storm of Internet commentary as viewers disagree over whether a certain dress is black and blue or white and gold,” reports Fox 13 News.

The report explained: “Things started when Tumblr user swiked posted a photo of the dress Wednesday, February 25, and asked: ‘Guys please help me – is this dress white and gold, or blue and black. Me and my friends can’t agree…'”

The report went on to note: “Some people have theorized the discrepancy [in people’s perception of the dress’ colors] arises from the way human eyes interpret color in varying degrees of darkness. Supposedly those who see different colors do so because the cones in their eyes aren’t responding to dim light. Some have found that viewing the same photo with different brightness settings changes the colors they see.”

Incidentally, Fox 13 News revealed that a dress is available on Amazon. There, the dress is featured in a photo that, perhaps, shows its true colors. The dress is officially called the Roman Women’s Lace Detail Bodycon Dress, with its color tagged as “royal blue.”

So, what gives?

For people’s further enlightenment, Wired’s Adam Rogers wrote a lengthy article on the matter: “The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress.” He basically points out that there’s a scientific explanation for the brouhaha.
