Viral: Motoring columnist James Deakin’s blog post on Skyway accidents

Just 12 days after a pickup was saved after it dangerously dangled off the edge of the Skyway, the same thing happened to a Montero Saturday night, expect it wasn’t so lucky.

On the exact same spot, the SUV plunged some 10 meters down, falling onto a concrete wall along the East Service Road.

Such accidents are becoming more and more common, raising alarm over the safety of the Skyway. Many say it’s the driver’s fault, but others say it must be because of the Skyway’s safety standards, or lack thereof, because it keeps happening on the same spot.

While his post on the matter may not sound sober — motoring columnist James Deakin sounds mad and about to flip over — his thoughts, posted on his website, make the most sense. No wonder it’s making the rounds on our social media feeds.

He says such accidents are a result of three important things: (1) the speeding and reckless driver, (2) ignorant and inconsiderate road users and finally (3) Skyway barriers.

“The main culprit here speeding combined with reckless driving, in the hands of an idiot that has all the driving skills of a three day old terd,” he writes.

He’s coming from hearing two eyewitness accounts that confirm that the Montero was going 160km/h — double the speed limit of the Skyway. “You were trying to do a highspeed slalom on public roads using moving cars as your cones,” Deakin addresses the Montero driver.

He then turns his gaze onto “ignorant and inconsiderate road users” who insist on hogging the overtaking lane.” The overtaking lane, in case you forget, is the LEFT LANE. Which means, don’t overtake using the right lane, and please, when you’re done overtaking, get off the left lane.

And finally, the Skyway barriers. “It only needs to be raised higher, as the Citizens Infrastructure Integrity Watchdog (Infrawatch) has told you,” he writes and then adds: “you really need to remove that curbing along the foot of the wall because it only acts as a launch pad.”
