We here at Coconuts Manila can never resist interesting stories that have to do with our namesake fruit — remember the men’s choir that sang Da Coconut Nut aboard an airplane? Well, the latest post people are going coconuts over is this one featuring a man who turned a coconut husk into a helmet.

The photos captured by photographer Dennis Tan were posted on Monday and taken during the Pamulak sa Kadayawan parade on Aug. 19 as part of the annual Kadayawan festival in Davao City.

In a Facebook message to Coconuts Manila, Tan said that as a photographer covering the event, his eyes were immediately drawn to the coconut helmet.

“[I]t fascinates me that the coconut husk was cut and formed precisely. Even the vents are well placed and cut. Also the straps are attached properly. Really [d]etailed,” he said.

And netizens were fascinated as well. Tan’s Facebook post now has 9,500 shares and more than 3,000 reactions.

Like Tan, many were amazed by the biker’s ingenuity.

Facebook user Rick-Isabel Poloquit said: “Creativeness is infinite…..and that’s the humble coconut husk!”

Ellen Capili simply said, “But it’s beautiful.”

While Will Chin went with a pun. “Why nut, right?” he said in English and Filipino.

Tan said he did not expect his photos to go viral and was surprised when he realized that they have.

“I shoot to express, not to impress,” he said.

Still, he knows why the pictures are so powerful.

“The photo depicts true Filipino [i]ngenuity. Despite various constraints, this never compromised the resourcefulness and creativity of the Filipinos.”

Who would’ve thought all that could come from a coconut helmet?
