Viral: Joey Ayala’s sober and thoughtful note on why he is voting for Duterte

We’re not surprised that respected and grounded singer Joey Ayala has been able to rise above the social media din that’s getting louder and nastier closer to the May 9 elections.

He has always been a voice of hope and reason, and on a Facebook note that’s measured, sober and insightful, the Filipino singer has written a compelling explanation on why he is voting for leading presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte.

“For better or worse his presidency will AT LEAST be more entertaining and less predictable than the straight line, business-as-usual, keeping up with the Joneses trajectory of media-whipped, Philippine patronage politics,” he wrote.

Ayala has lived in Davao and witnessed Duterte’s “commanding presence” — a rare quality that he says will be used for the Filipino’s benefit, he said. “Nakita ko ang pagaayos ng Dabaw, natira ako roon nang matagal. Magaling siyang Mayor, marunong mag-delegate at kaya ring mag micro-manage pag kailangan.”

He is the nephew of lawyer and industrialist Jesus “Chito” V. Ayala, “considered the FOREMOST leader of the anti-dictatorship movement in Southern Mindanao IN THE 70s AND 80s.”

Ayala argues his support of Duterte in four points that tackles issues like the politician’s push for federalism (“a step closer to politics-according-to-Nature”), supposed empathy (“he is an empath — that’s why he is an expert at ‘pushing buttons'”), crassness (“Give me an honest asshole that functions properly anytime!”).
