Truly the most random things can go viral online. In fact, the weirder, the better. That’s what this guy just learned after a video he posted showing him eating rice paired with “food” from his phone screen went viral.
The video is currently making its rounds online, garnering LOLs from thousands of netizens. It was posted by Klyde Legaspi, a 21-year-old freelance photographer/videographer and aspiring YouTube vlogger, late last month.
In it, Legaspi eats plain white rice with a variety of virtual ulam (food) projected on his phone screen.
“When it’s Friday but you’ve spent all your money on Monday,” the video’s caption reads.
Truly, this meal is for the short on budget.
In a Facebook message to Coconuts Manila, Legaspi said he was shocked to find out that his video had gone viral. He said that while his previous videos would be shared 30-60 times, this is the first time his content has reached thousands.
“When I uploaded the virtual ulam (dish), I was so shocked because shares reached the thousands.”
As of this writing, the video has gotten 1.8 million views, 45,000 shares, and 7,000 reactions.
According to Legaspi, this is actually a re-upload of the video (he added music). He said the original post had already gotten 1.4 million views before he took it down.
An aspiring vlogger who counts Filipino American YouTuber Wil Dasovich as one of his inspirations, Legaspi said this particular video was inspired by a scene from the local 90s comedy Si Ayala at si Zobel (Ayala and Zobel) where late comedian Babalu eats rice while looking and smelling at a piece of dried fish hanging from the ceiling.
Legaspi said that since his video went viral, his Facebook page has gained around 600 followers.
As a follow up to his viral video, Legaspi posted another one featuring virtual food but this time, during a drinking session.
In the video, a group of friends enjoys shots of brandy with virtual sisig (chopped up pig head), Jollibee burger steak, and ice cream.
