If we were part of the audience, we would have stared into our wine glass and willed that this wasn’t happening.
Sometime in September 2011, a Filipino student in Singapore named Harvey Campos attended a dialogue with the father of modern Singapore Lee Kwan Yew and asked a very random question: “I’d like to say there’s an old adage that says behind every successful man is a woman, and yours passed away last year…and I’m interested to see and hear from you how supportive your wife was in terms of her values and principles.”
The 89-year-old Lee, who was still grieving the demise of wife Kwa Geok Choo, who he had been with since they were studying law in London, understandably got pissed off. “I’m not here to let my hair down about family matters, I’m here to discuss public matters.”
This, however, did not deter Campos. “I just want to discuss about values and principes,” he followed up. “No, no, no,” Lee berated. “I said, my wife and I are matters which I keep within the family, not go public on. Full stop.”
That’s period to you, Mr Campos.
But why did Lee snap? According to opposition website TR Emeritus, “Others may speculate that Old Harry Lee, being stripped of his glamorous ‘Minister Mentor’ title a few months ago, might be extremely sensitive to questions or words hinting that he was no longer a decision-making member of the government’s Cabinet, or no longer an influential figure to comment on public matters – thus, his reminder to his audience, ‘I am here to discuss public matter!’ “
Below is the video that has been recently circulating in social media.
