A viral disease is spreading in Baguio City, one that has killed at least 27 horses since March.

At least 21 horses in the city’s Wright Park have been infected as of this week with Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) or swamp fever. A viral disease spread by bloodsucking insects, EIA causes weight loss, bleeding, and swelling of the legs and chest, said Baguio City’s veterinarian Dr. Brigitte Piok. She added that the only way to deal with it is to isolate the horse and euthanize it, ABS-CBN News reports.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong had already told the owners to remove their horses from Wright Park so they don’t get infected with EIA. It is still unclear how EIA had entered Baguio City.
