Police Officer 1 (PO1) Jeffrey Cruz of the Mobile Patrol Unit (MPU) of the Caloocan City Police is getting a lot of attention after he was seen helping a woman give birth at the foot of a Light Rail Transit (LRT) station last week.
A video clip of Cruz’s deed was shared by the Caloocan police and featured in a TV Patrol report by Kori Quintos.
It turns out that the police officer was also nurse before he joined the Philippine National Police (PNP). He and the other MPU personnel were doing a “reach-out operation” in the area when he noticed the woman in distress.
The woman who gave birth, Joanna Cruz (no relation to the police officer) and her partner Allan Dorado were both scavengers who had set up a makeshift home at the foot of the LRT station.
The homeless family is now under the care of the Caloocan Social Development Center. The couple say they want to name their baby boy after the police officer who helped in his birth.
Cruz received a commendation from the PNP.
