Adding to election-related violence in the Philippines this year is the death of a village official who was shot right after voting in Clarin, Misamis Occidental on Mindanao island.
Barangay (Village) Poblacion Uno councilor Rick Isidro Moreno was shot on his way home from voting at the Antero Uy Elementary School at around 8am today, ABS-CBN News reported. He was hit on the head, according to GMA News.
The still unidentified gunman immediately fled the scene while riding a motorcycle.
Moreno was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival, The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
His son told ABS-CBN News that the shooting may have been politically motivated because Moreno, who served as village chairman for three terms, was influential among voters.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
