The money dance is a Filipino wedding tradition that has endured until today: wedding guests, especially the couple’s chosen godparents and relatives, pin wads of cash on the newlyweds as they dance as a way of wishing them good fortune in their married life.

While most guests these days discreetly store the money in small envelopes before pinning it onto the couple, some wedding guests take a flashier route, such as this mom at a recent wedding.

Take the case of this mother who has blown the internet away after she pinned a massive sheet of money on her son during the latter’s wedding.

Event emcee Jam Saquilayan, who hosted the wedding, posted a video on social media.

In the video, the mother can be seen standing up and unfurling a transparent sheet made up of pockets each containing PHP1,000 bills. She then proceeds to tack the cash onto the groom’s back, to the wonderment of the other guests.

The host asks the crowd, “Do you want to know the total amount of these bills?” to which they respond positively.

Saquilayan revealed in the video that the groom’s mother gifted the newlyweds a total of PHP150,000 (US$2,670.32).

Another guest, identified as Mommy Nessy, also gifted the couple in a similar fashion, giving them a total of PHP53,200 (US$947.07).

The post was flooded with “Sana all (I hope all),” slang that

“That one tita (auntie) who loves to flex,” one joked.

Despite it being a tradition in places such as Batangas and Mindoro, not everyone was pleased with the display.

“Honestly, I’d prefer a small check given discreetly over this garish display,” one wrote.
As extravagant as the gifts given in the video above may seem, there have been weddings featuring even more opulent cash-based clothing in the past. One 2021 wedding in Quezon saw the newlywed couple receive a cape worth a staggering PHP 1.6 million.
