The internet loves animals, what with the number of cat videos and doggo memes that are uploaded every day, so it’s not surprising that netizens are up in arms over a recent video of a dog that was chained outside a house and left to suffer the Philippines’ unpredictable weather.
“Our neighbor’s poor dog ..How could you chain your dog during hot afternoons every day,” Facebook user Nemie Zaballero Carurucan said in Filipino in a post on Tuesday.
“If you can’t take care of your dog, just give it away … It would be better if you and your dog traded positions,” he added.
According to the Facebook post, Carurucan was on the roof of his house when he recorded the video that shows the dog tightly chained to the gate, its head hanging.
Carurucan said he immediately went down and tried to rescue the dog but its chain had a padlock. Because he was unable to free the dog, he just gave it a bucket to lean on and a piece of wood to block the sun.
In the video, Carurucan said that he had already called out the owner about the situation but there had been no change.
His post now has 71,000 reactions and close to 68,000 shares. The video has more than 6 million views.
Like Carurucan, netizens criticized the dog’s owner for being irresponsible.
“Poor dog..huhuhu..whoever did that angers my heart..no mercy,” Facebook user Jay Perez said.
Fely Mercado said that the owner should have been reported to authorities. “Hope the owner was reported to an animal welfare center so he can go to jail,” she said.
JM Gutang, had some harsh words for the owner.
“Whoever chained the dog, I hope karma gets to you. You make me hot-headed. No conscience, he should be arrested.. People don’t do that, demons do!” he said.
Some commenters even tagged animal rights organizations like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society).
If this is how you treat pets, you don’t deserve one.
