A Valenzuela City cop wasn’t having a good day over the weekend. In the early hours of Sunday, August 29, a police officer who was identified as Patrolman Angelo Mendoza Abalos was brought to the Valenzuela Emergency Hospital by his wife, as he was supposedly suffering the effects of high blood pressure.
At the triage area, the suspect allegedly threatened the health care workers present, saying, “‘Tangina naman, nagpakilala na akong pulis! Kung hawak ko lang ang baril ko, binaril ko na kayo!” (“[expletives deleted] I already told you I was a police officer! If I had my gun, I’d have shot you by now!”)
The nurse and security guard reported the incident to the authorities, who found Abalos confined at the hospital. By 10am, however, the suspect was hauled off to the police station to await the filing of formal complaints.
This incident drew the attention of no less than Philippine National Police Chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar, who issued a video statement on the official PNP Twitter account to announce that he has ordered an investigation into the incident.
“Inutusan ko na ang district director ng Northern Police District na agad magsagawa ng imbestigasyon upang malaman ang katotohanan sa reklamong ito at kung bakit ito nangyari,” Eleazar said. (“I have ordered the district director of the Northern Police District to conduct an immediate investigation to look into the truth of this complaint and why it happened.”)
Apparently mindful of the PNP’s reputation as trigger-happy power-trippers, Eleazar also said that they would not tolerate this kind of behavior. “Hindi natin kukunsintihin ang mga ganitong klaseng asal,” he said.
Just last week, police officer Jonel Nuezca, who was caught on video shooting two of his neighbors, was found guilty and sentenced to reclusion perpetua for his crimes. Earlier this year, another police officer, Hensie Zinampan, was also arrested after he was recorded on video shooting a woman.
