Valenzuela City’s 6.7-km bike lane makes it possible to pedal down MacArthur Highway

Even before the pandemic, cycling advocates have long called for Metro Manila to implement safer and more cyclist-friendly measures as another means to get around the city. After all, protected bike lanes help decongest traffic, reduce air pollution, and make roads safer for motorists and pedestrians alike. And with the pandemic still ravaging the metro, cycling enthusiasts have argued that bicycles help commuters socially distance more safely while getting to their destinations quicker and more efficiently.

Now here’s another win for cycling and urban planning advocates: Valenzuela City has announced that they are opening a 6.7-kilometer bicycle lane along MacArthur Highway.

The local government made the announcement on their official Facebook page Thursday, September 16. According to the Valenzuela City Facebook page, the 6.7-kilometer stretch will run from Barangay Marulas to Barangay Mandalay.

As cities are beginning to design “human-centered” infrastructure — prioritizing accessibility, pedestrians, and bikes — maybe Metro Manilans will actually begin to enjoy their daily commutes. Here’s to hoping we hear more developments like this all throughout the country.
