Barring truly nefarious characters, we must respect our elders.
The city government of Valenzuela is pushing “An Ordinance Providing a Protection Program for the Elderly Residents of Valenzuela City Against Abuse and Redefining Their Rights Thereof.” The resolution aims to strengthen the protection of elders aged 60 and older from both physical and verbal abuse.
“Public ridicule, physical harm, depriving financial support, and even inflicting physical harm on one’s self to control the action or decision-making of an elderly person are among the 12 categories of acts prohibited under the resolution,” reports Carlo Suerte Felipe in Manila Bulletin Online.
According to the report, those who violate the ordinance’s provisions will get a penalty of prision mayor, which translates to an imprisonment lasting a minimum of 6 years and one day and a maximum of 12 years.
