The University of the Philippines will be now using a Braille booklet to administer the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) to students with disabilities. The Braille booklet is a first in the Special UPCAT, which considers applicants with visual and hearing impairment, as well as learning disabilities like dyslexia.
The special exam is normally given the week following the UPCAT weekend, which will be on August 3-4 this year. On August 9, Prof. Therese Burgos of the UP College of Education will be administering the UPCAT to one visually impaired examinee using the new booklet. Burgos, who has been training special education teachers in the University, has been giving the Special UPCAT to students for five years now.
Another batch of examinees has been scheduled to take the UPCAT on August 7. There are five of them and majority have hearing disabilities. The Special UPCAT is held at the Office of Admissions at the UP Diliman campus, VERA Files reported.
