Unlike at other colleges, when people refer to the “wildlife” at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus, they probably are referring to the diverse collection of flora and fauna found there.
The UP Wild, a community of nature lovers and conservationists on Facebook, posted a copy of the UP Biodiversity Map, which shows the different types of habitats found within the sprawling state university campus, and where the dozens of birds, amphibians, mammals, and reptile species may be found.
As one of the few green spaces in Metro Manila, the Diliman campus is famously home to many different species, and students often encounter animals rarely seen elsewhere.
In fact, this inventory of species found on the UP and Ateneo de Manila campuses listed a total of 76 vertebrate species when it was published in 1999. This included six species of amphibians, 13 species of reptiles, 47 species of bird, and ten species of mammals—a number of which were endemic.
