University of Makati offers post-grad scholarships to city employees, teachers

Makati City Hall employees and city public school teachers can take masteral and doctoral programs at the city-owned University of Makati free.

The scholarships were made possible by an ordinance passed in 2012 that exempts city government employees and public school teachers from paying tuition at the UMak College of Governance and Public Policy and at UMak College of Arts and Sciences and Education. Regular tuition fee for UMak’s graduate programs is P750 per unit.

“We urge qualified city employees and teachers to lose no time in availing themselves of the free graduate programs at UMak, which are aimed to develop topnotch public servants who are capable of delivering world-class services to our constituents and clients,” Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. said.

To qualify for the scholarship, employees and teachers need to have served the city for at least three years.

Thirty-two city employees are enrolled under the program for the first semester of 2013-2014, with most of them working towards a Master’s degree in Public Administration.

“This free graduate program gives city government employees and public school teachers the chance to qualify for a regular employment status or a promotion after having rendered a reasonable length of service,” Binay said.
