UE’s Manila campus temporarily closed in wake of fire

On Sat morning, Apr 2, fire broke out in the buildings of the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering, and the University Chapel of the University of the East (UE) in Manila. Students, faculty, and other school employees were immediately evacuated. Nobody was reported hurt.

“Emergency dispatch server TXTFIRE Philippines recorded the start of the fire at 9:35am, moving up to Task Force Charlie level. Task Force Charlie entails that the deputy regional director of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) being alerted and involved in the operations,” reports Camille Diola in The Philippine Star.

The fire was declared under control by 10:39am.

In an official statement posted on its Facebook page, UE management disclosed, “The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The estimated damage to property is still being determined. UE Manila, as well as the other UE campuses, are on heightened security alert to ensure the safety of everyone in the UE community.”

Following the statement, UE management also announced that the UE Manila campus will be closed to students and visitors on Mon, Apr 4. Its other campuses (Caloocan, University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, and the UE Annex Building) will remain open. They said they will post another advisory about when the Manila campus will reopen.
