Non-profit organization The Asia Foundation, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development, has launched YouthLed’s 2021 Leadership and Democracy (LEAD) Fellowship, a two-year program that aims to prepare Filipino youths for democratic governance.

Filipinos from 18 to 30 years old are encouraged to apply for the fellowship, where they will be exposed to training sessions and various engagements from May 2021 to March 2023. Educational activities are conducted in partnership with the Asian Institute of Management’s Future Bridging Leadership Program, Ateneo School of Governments’ Executive Education Courses, and Ayala Foundation Inc.’s Servant Leadership Program.

Participants will also have mentorship sessions with the Makati Business Club and Philippine Business for Social Progress.

Emil Tapnio, a specialist from The Asia Foundation, said it was necessary to organize such fellowships despite the challenges brought by the pandemic. He said that young people’s contribution to development is “essential,” given that their generation will bear the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“YouthLed LEAD Fellowship is our effort in making sure that people, especially the youth, are given the opportunity and awareness of the role that they play in democratic governance,” he told Coconuts Manila.

“YouthLed LEAD Fellowship aims to truly capacitate [the] youth to be part of the decision-making process right from the start. More than being vocal on social media, we want to enable young Filipinos to be front liners in leading programs and interventions in their communities,” he added.

Interested youths can send their applications until Feb. 28. For more information on required documents, visit www.youthled.org.ph or facebook.com/YouthLedPH or email youthledph@asiafoundation.org.
