The first fatality was 40-year-old Major Arnold Lubang, a member of the Philippine Millitary Class of 2000. He participated in the 21-kilometer half-marathon race.

He passed out when he was only a kilometer away from the finish line.

He was helped by other participants who saw him collapse, but he died on they way to the Asian Hospital.

The second victim was identified as Manases Alfon, a 38-year old from Cebu City. He died while running in the 42-kilometer full marathon.

The Condura Skyway Marathon Facebook page confirmed the deaths, and they posted messages of sympathy for the families of the deceased.

“These young men at the prime of their lives joined the marathon to help out a great cause and that is to send the children of our fallen soldiers to school through the Hero Foundation. We honor them. Today they are our Heroes too,” their post read.

The funds raised from the event will be used to provide financial aid to families of soldiers who were killed or incapacitated while in the line of duty.
