Does Korina Sanchez not know how passionate Filipino K-pop fans are?

The veteran TV anchor is currently under fire online for a Facebook post where she wondered out loud about the popularity of Korean pop music in the country.

The post has since been deleted but not before Twitter user @jacvillafuerte took a screenshot and posted it online.

Sanchez, who is the wife of former senator Mar Roxas, said on Sunday that the Filipino youth went “gaga” over South Korean boy band Wanna One during its concert in Manila on Saturday.

“PHP13,000 (US$242.73) and kids get their parents to spend for songs the lyrics of which Filipinos don’t even understand!” she said in a mix of English and Filipino.

“The phenom is worldwide. It’s the look [of these Korean acts], I think!” she added, saying that all the K-pop concerts she’s been to are filled with starstruck “kids” high on K-pop fever.

“The Philippines has contributed a lot to the economy of [South] Korea,” she ended her post.

Apart from the perceived condescension in her post, many K-pop fans criticized Sanchez — a journalist who has been to a number of concerts — for not understanding what drives the fandoms.

@jacvillafuerte, the Twitter user who reshared the anchor’s post said:

“It’s a shame but yeah, she goes to kpop concerts and features it to (sic) her show (Rated K) even if this is how she feels about kpop and its fans.”

@armyayin chimed in, saying it’s too bad that the “general public still listens to her (Sanchez).”

“Korina Sanchez is a fucking hypocrite and greedy. Interviewing Momoland and greeting them with ‘Annyeong’ and all but deep down she hates K-pop? Attending Exo’s Concert and proclaiming that she likes them? F*ck off, Korina,” said @_starryjhs.

Twitter user @apeachxxx101 wrote: “Hello Mrs. Korina Sanchez, but with all due to respect, labelling (sic) fans at Wanna One’s concert as “gaga”, “[who] get their parents to spend for songs [of] the lyrics of which isn’t understood [of Filipinos] and “it’s the look [of Korean acts]” are offensive and unjustified judgements (sic). Read between the lines.”

“[I]’m quite offended of what Korina Sanchez said about fans spending 13k for a song that [they] didnt even understand and [the] looks [of Korean acts]. [L]ike wtf? [W]ho would spend that much if they’re just there for the looks and that songs that we can’t even understand?” asked @@sjxxxshinee.

@ElleNoona1210 reposted the screenshot and said: “Nope. It’s the talent. The passion. Same reason why I attend concerts of US artists. And Ms. Annyeonghasseyo, we do understand the lyrics. Unlike you we know how to use Google and we know how to study the language.”

Meanwhile, Roxas posted about Wanna One on Sunday, saying she had a great time at the concert.

Never mess with Filipino K-pop stans, Korina.
