Tuesday train scare: LRT brakes emit smoke, people panic

Light Rail Transit (LRT) trains are subjected to so much abuse — so, naturally, we should expect them to break down from time to time. But the sight of smoke could be anybody’s undoing.

“On Tuesday afternoon, Mar 4, passengers at the Doroteo Jose station of the LRT Line 1 panicked after they saw smoke coming out from one of the train’s coaches,” reports dzMM correspondent Zhander Cayabyab on ABS-CBNnews.com.

The train had been on the southbound lane approaching the Doroteo Jose station.

According to Police Senior Inspector Romeo Rosini, a group of teenagers had started shouting that the train was on fire. Of course, the other passengers panicked. People who were waiting on the platform also got scared, with some of them thinking that there was a bomb threat.

When the smoke cleared (literally), LRT spokesperson Atty. Hernando Cabrera explained that the brakes of the train had just gotten stuck, causing it to emit smoke. He emphasized that the train did not catch fire nor did the LRT receive a bomb threat.

Luckily, no one was injured in the “panic surge.”
