Truck driver, bystanders among 9 killed in multiple-vehicle pile-up in Rizal

Nine people were killed and at least five others injured when two trucks and a jeepney collided in Cardona, Rizal this morning.

Authorities say that the accident happened at around 5am when a cargo truck was speeding near a downward curve in the road in Looc village, DzBB reports. Bong Bernabe, head of the Cardona Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said the cargo truck’s brakes failed, causing the vehicle to plow into an oncoming jeepney. A third vehicle, a dump truck, also crashed into the jeepney, according to GMA News.

Cardona Police Chief Capt. Juner Mojares told DZMM Teleradyo that they have yet to identify the victims, but said most were bystanders out for a morning jog or “buying pandesal” (a breakfast roll). Mojares said the driver of the second truck was one of those killed on the spot, while the first truck driver was rushed to the hospital. The jeepney was not carrying any passengers, just a driver and conductor.

Authorities are still determining the condition of the injured who were rushed to the hospital.
