Last week, Filipinos rejoiced after learning that several Filipino words have been included in the Oxford English Dictionary.
According to a Inquirer report, there are exactly 40 Filipino words that made it, including ‘utang na luob’, ‘presidentiable,’ ‘balikbayan,’ ‘sari-sari store’ and even ‘kikay.’
Our favorite of the lot? ‘Mani-pedi.’
According to a blog post on the Oxford Dictionaries website, “the word ‘mani-pedi’ now widely used all over the English-speaking world, has been discovered to be of Philippine origin: it was first used by renowned Filipino writer Kerima Polotan-Tuvera in an essay published in 1972.”
Who knew?
Meanwhile, ‘barangay’ is the oldest Philippine item in the batch of new Oxford-approved words. It first appeared in an 1840 edition of American publication Sailors Magazine, the Oxford blog post continues.
